Land Acknowledgement:
We, the members of We Belong, acknowledge that our presence in Canada spans the traditional and unceded territories of many Indigenous nations across Turtle Island. Specifically:
- Vancouver stands on the lands of the Coast Salish peoples, including the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
- Toronto is situated on the traditional territories of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples.
- Ottawa lies on the traditional and unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe Nation.
- Montreal is located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) Nation.
- Halifax resides on the traditional lands of the Mi’kmaq people.
As Chinese immigrants and descendants who came to Canada as part of the colonial project, we recognize that our journey is intertwined with the history of colonialism and displacement. We acknowledge the deep and ongoing injustices faced by Indigenous peoples, including the theft of their lands, suppression of their cultures, and systemic discrimination.
We stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples in their fight for sovereignty, rights, and cultural preservation. We recognize that the experiences of marginalization and the historical and ongoing oppression of Indigenous peoples require all marginalized groups, including ours, to unite in the struggle for justice and liberation.
